The Founder’s AI-Powered Patent Drafting Journey
When I became a patent attorney in 2008, I was struck by a paradox at the heart of our profession. We spend our days working on the world’s greatest inventions, yet our own process begins with the most basic of tools: a blank Word document.
Being a computer scientist by training, this always felt wrong. It was like asking a developer to write code in a text editor, without the intelligent tools that have been standard for decades. We were safeguarding the future with tools from the past.
For years, this challenge remained in the back of my mind.
Then, in November 2022, everything changed. The release of ChatGPT was a lightning bolt. I saw the parallel instantly. The flow of Text > AI Model > Text was a mirror of our own core function: Invention > Patent Attorney > Patent.
The potential was undeniable, but it came with a critical, non-negotiable requirement: absolute confidentiality.
Before I could use this technology, I had to find a process that guaranteed client data was protected. My initial explorations focused on proving the concept with secure, offline models, establishing a foundational understanding for building a robust, enterprise-grade secure architecture for the future. Once I had a methodology I could trust, I knew I had to share it. I started hosting seminars and courses, and the response was incredible. I’ve had the privilege of teaching several hundred of my peers—fellow patent attorneys from Europe and around the world—how to effectively use AI to draft patents.
Teaching crystalized a new insight: the profession doesn’t need more automation; it needs better augmentation. That realization marked the genesis of the Patent Drafting Toolbox.
I am now channeling everything I’ve learned from my practice, my research, and my training sessions into developing tools designed for one specific task: drafting patents with the precision of a European Patent Attorney.
